Following error is displayed while registering the Win2K5 Standard Edition Server.

(Provider:Named Pipes Provider, error:40-could not open a connection to SQL server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error:53)

Server is Standard Edition and surface area configuration done to access local/Remote connection through named pipe or TCP/IP

From client node ping is successful. Client is trying to connect to the server over internet through a VPN.

What could be the reason for not able to connect?

Check whether the SQL listening port is enabled on your firewall and accepts connections on VPN.
