Replicating Between Server 2008 and Compact 3.5 ?

Hi all,
I'm sorry for two quick back to back questions.
I want to set up a publication on SQL Server 2008 for a Compact 3.5 client.
The SQL Server Comapct 3.5 BOL
(ms-help://MS.SSC.v35/MS.SSC.v35.EN/sscmain/html/b5ffa86b-03da-4427-b340-9f53dc22c8a9.htm)
indicates I should set the "Subscriber Type" to "SQL Server Compact 3.5" when
using the Publication Wizard. Unfortunately, the "Subscriber Types" page of
the wizard does not allow me to create a subscription for Compact 3.5. I can
create a subscription for SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition but not for Compact
3.5 -- the option is simply not there.
Is there something special I need to do to get the Compact 3.5 option to
appear in the Publication Wizard?
thanks much.
Tom Baxter
Hello Tom,
I think it's a BOL issue since it's not updated when the SQL Server Comapct
3.5 is released. SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (new version) is the
released name of SQL Server compact 3.5.
SQL Server Compact 3.5 Features Datasheet (Datasheet)
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/f/c/7fc20778-4e2e-4944-b432-ed74b40

You just choose "SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition" in publication wizard.
I have forwarded your feedback on this to the proper channel. Also, I
encourage you submit via the link below and our product team would like to

Peter, Are you sure about this?
Take a look at this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=85E0C3CE-3FA1-453A-8CE9-AF6CA20946C3&displaylang=en
This page provides the download for SQL Server Compact 2005 but the "Quick
Details" section of the page indicates version 3.1.
Now, take a look at this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?&FamilyID=7849b34f-67ab-481f-a5a5-4990597b0297&DisplayLang=en
This page provides the download for SQL Server Compact 3.5 but the "Quick
Details" section of the page indicates version 3.5.5386.0.
I'm confused. Are you sure SQL Server Comapct 2005 is the release name for
SQL Server 3.5? If so, how do you account for the version number differences?
Thank you very much.

|||As a follow up, here is more "evidence" that 3.5 is newer than SQL Server
2005 Compact:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/bb204609.aspx
Here's a quote from this page:
SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition is the earlier version of SQL Server Compact
3.5 and was previously named SQL Server 2005 Everywhere Edition during the
product development phase.
So, it looks like version 3.5 is NOT the release name of SQL Server 2005
Compact.

|||Hello Tom,
Sorry for the late response. I agree with you that SQL Server 2005 Compact
Edition is the earlier version of SQL Server Compact 3.5 so I mentioned SQL
Server 2005 Compact Edition (new version) in my reply. However, I still
think this subscriber type SQL Server 2005 Compact should be choosen if you
want to replicate with SQL Server Compact 3.5.
I will contact developer team to see if they have more explanation for
this. Also, do you encounter any actual error if you use this subscriber
type? Actually, from my test machine I saw "SQL Server 2005 Everywhere
Edition" in subscriber type dialog.
Did you install Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Server Tools? Which SQL
Server verion do you use? Do you use SQL server 2005 or 2008 CTP?
In addition, will you please get a screen shot of the subscriber typ
selection dialog and send it to me at petery@.microsoft.com? Thanks.

|||Hi Peter,
I've done more research sinc emy original posting. We are synchronizing with
SQL Server 2008 and from what I read
(http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlservercompact/) we *MUST* use SQL Compact 3.5 SP1.
We *CANNOT* replicate compact 3.5 with SQL Server 2008.
So, at this point I am looking for the SP1 download. It does not sema to be
available from the Microsoft site (although Compact 3.5 SP1 *IS* installed as
part of SQL Server 2008).

|||It seems Comapct 3.5 SP1 is currently in beta. It is available with the
November, 2007 CTP of SQL Server 2008. You can find the installation in:
\servers\setup\SSCERunTime.msi of the SQL Server 2008 installtion image.
Incidentally, SQL Server 2008 will replicate just fine with either SQL
Server Compact 3.5 RTM *OR* SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta.
